In this class, students will have the opportunity to create a folk art rooster using the wet felting process to make felt, and then needle felting for added embellishments. Instruction and demonstration will include: laying out the wool using strips of dark prefelt to outline the design and then filling in the spaces with dyed wool batting, adding soapy water, rolling, fulling, and shaping. For those who would like to add any extra patterns once the wet felting is completed, needle felting will be gone over. This includes safety precautions and proper use and demonstration of the technique. Examples will be provided, with more than one design to choose from, and though project samples vary based on the layout and final fulling process, the approx. finished size after shrinking the wool is 10”x10”. These felt rooster pieces are lovely as a wall hanging, either hung as-is, framed, adhered to canvas, etc.
Note: Though beginners and those with little felting experience are certainly welcome, it will be helpful to gain a basic understanding of what wet felting is prior to the class. Come prepared to have an upper body workout throughout the fulling process!
