Textile Imaginings

Artists: Mary Bajcz, Katie McGrath, and Kathryn Schmidt

We are abstract artists who use textiles as our medium. Our love of color and design is enhanced by the textures we achieve using cloth and stitch. While we sometimes incorporate the traditions of quilting, we work improvisationally, enhancing our work with innovative and experimental techniques. Our passions, causes and visual reactions are reflected in the selections we make from the abundance of fiber options. Our goal is to present works that draw you in, then engage you with detail and delight.

Earth, Nature, and the Common Thread

Earth, Nature, and the Common Thread brings together three distinct exhibitions by three groups of artists in one gallery space. Each group of artists has found a commonality through medium or approach, and their shared artistic exploration helps to inform and advance their work.

One group features ceramic artwork by members of the West Michigan Potters Guild and showcases the many approaches to working with clay both sculptural and functional including alternative firing techniques such as raku, pit firing and wood firing.

Another group presents Shore to Shore Michigan, an exhibition of 55 two dimensional pieces completed en Plein air (the French term for painting outdoors) by members of the Great Lakes Plein air Painters Association.

The third group is made up of three artists who create abstract textiles works that combine a love of color and design with textures achieved by using cloth and stitch, sometimes incorporating the traditions of quilting along with other innovative and experimental techniques.

The 3 exhibitions are titled: Earth, Water and Fire: Ceramic Artwork by the West Michigan Potters Guild, Shore to Shore Michigan: Great Lakes Plein air Painters Association, and Textile Imaginings by Mary Bajcz, Katie McGrath, and Kathryn Schmidt.
