As a professional potter heading into my 25th year, I can see how my upbringing has influenced my art career. My parents were early environmentalists and taught me the beauty of nature and the out of doors as well as the value of being able to work with my hands. I was able to use wood, fabric, clay, metal, and found items. I attended East Grand Rapids High School and took extensive art classes for all 4 years. I took 4 years of English, literature, and writing classes. The next step was to attend 4 different colleges studying art and received my degree in Fine Art. I also attend art education classes in different mediums and continue to do so to increase my skill level and my knowledge. I am also a member of the West Michigan Potters Guild and of the Lowell Area Arts.
My focus has been on working with Michigan Stoneware clay and hand build each piece myself, using textures from leaves, nature, ferns, and vintage printing letter stamps to make impressions onto the clay. I am very interested in making pottery that is functional and used daily. My interest in literature and wording is able to be expressed in my pottery with my use words and phrases with encouraging and inspiring thoughts.
My ceramic art has been purchased by many international collectors over the years and is in such countries as Sweden, France, Russia, Singapore, New Zeeland, Germany, and Africa. I see that my ceramics are admired and appreciated by all ages of people from all over the world and I am careful to use safe, permanent materials including commercial grade professional glazes and finishes. I am confident that each piece will be able to be enjoyed for many many years with timeless designs and styles.
At this time my pottery can be seen at several well known art galleries on the east side of Michigan and several shops in Northern Michigan. I select about 6 top Art Shows each year to show at and Fallasburg is one of those shows. I have a large following of loyal collectors and they try to attend as many shows as they can that I am participating in.
